Email list tools: Kit, Mailchimp, Constant Contact, ActiveCampaign, Campaign Monitor
Keep your email tool's list in step with your members, without ever re-subscribing someone who opted out.
What syncs
Active members are added to your list (or updated, matched by email) with their name and, from the first sync, three fields the sync creates in the tool: Mybers Level, Mybers Status and Mybers Renewal Date (merge fields MLEVEL, MSTATUS, MRENEWAL in Mailchimp; custom fields in Kit, ActiveCampaign, Constant Contact and Campaign Monitor). Use them for segments ("level is Gold", "renewal date is next month") and personalization. Kit also tags subscribers Mybers: Gold and so on, so a Kit sequence can start from a level.
Opt-outs are respected
If a member unsubscribes from your emails in Mybers, the sync unsubscribes or removes them in the email tool too, and never adds them back.
When a membership lapses
A lapse, suspension or cancellation reaches the list the moment it happens, and on every full sync. You choose what it does on the tool's Settings tab:
- Keep them on the list, Mybers Status shows lapsed (the default). Nothing is added for someone the tool doesn't already have. Use a segment or automation on Mybers Status to send member-only mail to active members and a win-back series to lapsed ones. Kit also drops the Mybers: Gold level tag.
- Remove them until they renew. Mailchimp archives the contact, Kit and ActiveCampaign unsubscribe them from the list, Constant Contact and Campaign Monitor take them off it. When they renew, the next push adds them back (Kit is the exception: an unsubscribed Kit subscriber has to re-subscribe themselves).
Who picks which: a chamber or association running a renewal campaign keeps lapsed members and segments on status; a club whose list is the member-only newsletter removes them. Pending members (joined but not yet approved or paid) are never added to the list.
Setting up
Each tool's page shows exactly where to find its API key (and list ID, for Campaign Monitor and Constant Contact). After installing, new and changed members are pushed right away; turn on a daily schedule to catch anything else.
- Mailchimp: the key ends in your data center (like
-us21); the Audience ID is under Audience → Settings. - Kit: use a v4 key from Settings → Developer, not the older v3 key.
- Campaign Monitor: click Generate API key. The Client ID on the same page is not the key.
- Constant Contact: the app's API key alone doesn't work; you need the access token from its authorization flow, and that token expires. When the Logs tab shows 401, authorize again and paste the new token.
- ActiveCampaign: both the API URL and the key are on Settings → Developer.
